Co-Regulation - I Can't Put My Shoes On

I've tried connecting and being there for my child when they have the tantrum, I try to get down on the level, et cetera. What is the best place to be for them? Do we separate them and put them in another room or stay with them? My kids always push me away and don't want physical contact. And it kind of runs into our next question.
