The History of the Caribbean
Columbus devised a system whereby indigenous islanders who had paid their tribute were issued a copper token that they were expected to wear around their necks at all times. After being hunted as human chattel, now being compelled to labor endlessly sifting gold in the rivers, many islanders despaired and chose to end their own lives. It's been guessed that somewhere around 50,000 islanders chose to die by poisoning themselves so that they could be able to escape themselves starving themselves to death or by plunging off of cliffs.
