It decreases the inflow of blood to the portal system by constricting those little arterials, and then that theoretically reduces pressure in the varices. It equates to about a half a unit less blood given to an esophageal variceal bleed than patients who didn't receive it. So I guess if you extrapolate that out times a hundred variceal bleeds, it can serve resources.
