CHAPTER

Paul Volker

Paul Volker took a 50 percent pay cut to become the new chairman of the Federal Reserve in 1979. His daughter recalls how he lived in an apartment that was like a dorm for college students. She says sometimes when she would visit, there would be a keg in the hallway from a student's party. The next month, inflation rises from 12 percent to 12 and a half percent.
