In 2002, there was a proposal for the IRS to develop a free tax preparation tool. The maker of TurboTax wasn't too keen on that and struck a bargain with other software companies. In many ways, the participating companies are providing an excellent service for free. But here's the catch: While the federal return is free, you may have to pay for the state return.
If the upcoming earnings season tells us anything, it will be which companies are getting better (or worse) at managing their inventory.
