The History of Rhode Island
Rhode island, from the founding, followed a policy of separation of church and state. They instituted rules protecting what williams called sole liberty. People whose ideas were persecuted or condemned in other colonies fled to rhode island. We saw people who were suspected or accused of witchcraft also fleeing to Rhode island because there were no laws around witchcraft in rhode Island. And basically, something like what we would to day call a tolerant society existed in rhode island although people certainly were not treated equally under social custom.
