There's been a current in feminist literature that, you know, we used to originally live in peaceful nurturing goddess worshipping societies and they got overwhelmed by these conquering hordes. Friedrich Engels' argument was that then thousands of years ago, at a time we can't necessarily identify, there was this world historical defeat of the female sex. But I think the picture is a bit more complex. Some things did happen, they just happened over a very long period of time and they weren't quite as binary and simplistic as that theory kind of claims them to be.
