Ken Lanning used to work for the fbi. After ten years as an agent in the field, ken has a desk job. He's the guy you call if you're a police officer trying to solve a complex sex crime. A couple of weeks later, his phone rings again. It's another police officer king for help in a case involving a woman who says she was abused as a child by a group of people belonging to a satanic cult. The reason that it can spread so easily is the fertile ground exists in the mind of man, the need to believe, the need for the simple answer to complex problems.
