Crusading in the Byzantine Empire
A crusading is becoming a kind of family business. Certain royal families are taking it up repeatedly as a sort of mark of their worthiness to rule. Frederick barbarossa, the holy roman emperor, accidentally drowns after falling off his horse in a river. So suddenly a struggle ensues for who will succeed frederick barbarossa. And so pretty quickly, richard the first of england becomes the main leader of this crusade. This is the richard who later becomes known as richard the lion heart. He's the one who is worked into the premises of the robin hood stories as we know them.
