The Importance of Empathy
In sesame street video, Mark Ruffalo defines empathy as the ability to imagine another's pain. Empathy is a Greek root but it's not really a Greek concept; it's taken from the German. According to simulation theory, we use our imaginations to empathetically put ourselves in the position of the other person. So if you stub your toe, I might imagine what it feels like when I stub my toe. That's the simulation that I constructed my imagination that leads to empathy.
