The Unintended Consequences of the Inability to Free Slaves

The inability to free slaves was an unintended consequence of the fact that debts were heritable. I'm a little bit puzzled by that explanation for this reason so I can see how given the entailment of land and real property then essentially you'll be treated all property as though you didn't have a full bundle of property rights. You have your human property which you treated similarly to land and houses but presumably you were able to give things away as gifts of high value because if you're able to give away safe carriages or horses or livestock as gifts to family members to the church to whatever why couldn't you do the same with persons who are enslaved?
