The History of the British Empire
I think it's really important things are considered when they attract authoritarianism, you can make it self attractive. The Empire wasn't just like one big civilizing mission where everyone was made to sort of be transformed in the image of the mother country. It was actually all about creating these strange little different forms of legal jurisdiction. And so I think there's ways that we can see these zones as kind of like the inheritors of that imperial legacy and territorial diversity.
