The Rise and Fall of Telezio

Tomasso Campanella was the most famous thinker to be carried away with enthusiasm for this new theory. He had encountered Telezio's ideas during a period of tense study which involved surveying ancient literature and more recent offerings, seeking to compare what he found with the Book of Nature. This was a favourite metaphor of Campanella's, God has given us two books, the Revelation of the Bible and the world itself. The universe is the better of the two books for those who know how to read it, since it is inscribed in living letters, not like scripture in dead letters, which are only signs, not things.
