There are horrors in this novel, but people had no trouble with them. Because it's a foreign culture, I guess. And it was, I don't know if France had anything like a Victorian phase at that time. But they seem to see this novel as a very sexy novel. It is strange reading it today and strange knowing what I thought they were supposed to be like.
