The Wretched of the Earth - Frantz Fanon: On National Consciousness and National Culture
Red Menace
The Colonized Intellectual and the Negritude Movement
Fanon argues that the urge on behalf of the colonized intellectual to return to his people's past is in fact a quote unquote, burning desperate return to anything. He says culture is not to be found in a petrified past, but in the churning of the present struggle for liberation. This phase can be understood as a sort of correction to the previous stages, namely the phases of assimilation and the phase desperately trying to speak to his people instead of the colonizer. What Fanon refers to as literature of combat amounts to a revival of national culture under its nose.
