The Stahlhelm comes into being in 1916 now I'm sure my wife could have a glance at one and would never notice any difference between 19 producing 1916 and 1945. Although they do look fairly similar there were several distinct efforts to change matters the first World War I is different in that it has very prominent side lugs. On those side lugs they were able to hang a brow plate which literally went over the soldier's brow so you've got two layers of metal the helmet itself and then a thicker piece in front which was actually to some extent bulletproof which the rest of the helmet wasn't.
