Nina dos Santos: We should recognize that our democracy isn't just under assault. Right now, we do not have an adequate defense to fight against this. She says the government is flagging things that expressly go against social media companies' terms of service and policies. Dos Santos: For them, disinformation is really good for business because it triggers flight or flight. And so if you want to increase engagement and advertising revenue, having your algorithms promote engaging content like disinformation and hate speech is a super way of doing it.
