The Blind Spot in Primary Care
Politicians have a blind spot when it comes to primary care and GPs. They don't have any direct experience of what we do in general practice. A GP can sort out who actually needs hospital care really efficiently, but I can also deal with the health problems of the 99 who don't. We get even more efficient if we know our patients. There's some kind of idea that the NHS is manning the gates and then allowing people through. But that's not true. The real gatekeeper is over 90% of all the healthcare that goes on in this country.
