The Eyes and Visual Phenomena
Buddhism and hinduism have explored the full range of working with the eyes as a method for liberation. The downward gaze is considered to be the shravaka or the arhot gaze. And then it's been a long time since i've seen this, but there's the heruka gaze. And that is like more wrathful, more open, more dynamic. That's upward facing. All of these appearances are actually, like melinta says, logs on the fire of our awareness. It just helps awareness blaze forth even stronger.
