The Hyatt Corporation did not want to contribute to the memorial, because that hotel and Crown Center, where the disaster happened, was actually a Sheridan now. However, after a public backlash, Hyatt ultimately donated $25,000 to the project. Sheraton matched that amount. In 2021, on the 40th anniversary of the tragedy, families gathered at the memorial to remember. Every Kansas City was either impacted or know someone who was impacted by the tragedy.
