Viertus is something that just feels vigorous and it feels alive, right? And there's a lot of that in what Machiavelli is talking about when he talks about viertus. He's attributing to these guys a kind of life force and energy, a kind of throughline to their activity. But it's not the same thing as what we would call the ethical virtue of courage.
