The Sixth Principle, the Formal Elements of Marriage

St. Thomas wrote that the formal element of marriage is this, the inseparable union of souls of the married couple. Just as a human person is a composite of body and soul in which what is formal, the soul must be united to what is material and body. The conjugal act itself is the place par excellence where the formal aspect of marriage is united in the bodily aspect.
