The Provocation of Russia

Ukraine's westward trajectory started in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed or split up wherever you want to talk about it. So if we talk about provoking Russia, my view is that pushing NATO closer to Russia's borders is a source of irritation and threat to Russia. And so I don't disagree that there's an element of that provocation. But the reason all those countries were desperate to join NATO is, for example, if you take Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, these countries were never part of Russia. They were conquered first by the Nazis and then by Stalin in the deal that they did to divide all of Eastern Europe. These were not countries that want to be associated with Russia. And none
