The Spartan Boys and the Erotis
The Spartan system created tough disciplined boys, who had reverence for the Spartan state. The E-4s inspected the boys daily and examined them in the nude every ten days. They slept in groups on a self-constructed mat of pulled reeds, and they took daily baths in the icy waters of the Erotis. It was understood that they would try to steal from hellots, but if they got caught, they were whipped. Unlike the rest of the Greeks, who made war only in the summer, the spards needed to be prepared to fight year round.
