Sewell Wright was a Harvard educated geneticist and he thought that the whole Mendelian system didn't always work so well. In fact, there's this story, which may or may not be apocryphal, where he was giving a lecture with a piece of chalk in one hand and a guinea pig in the other hand. I don't know if it's true, but in my head, it's true. It wasn't life great before IRB.
