The Meaning of Carnival in Lent

In the US, we commonly refer to what others call carnival as Mardi Gras. It is French for Fat Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday. The word carnival derives from Carneam-Lovare in Latin, which means to remove or to take away meat. During Lent, many Americans, both those of the faith and some who are not, choose to fast.
