Abilard's Theory of Morality
Abilard's theory amounts to the claim that morality has to do only with the second stage of consent. Good and bad lie with the intentions we form, he writes. Abilard is convinced that pagans, especially pagan philosophers, were capable of virtue. His ethical theory is similar to one we saw a long time ago in the Stoics,. They thought that human action involves giving consent to a motivating impression that one ought to do something.
