The Double Utilitarianism of Mill
Is it fair that criticism is sometimes made of Mill, which is this sort of double utilitarianism? So you have to believe in love for its own sake, but that then turns out to be very useful for human progress. I think there is a tension in Mill between a kind of objective standard of progress and the idea we are all fundamentally different. What is good for one person might not be what is good for another. We each must find our own best path through experiments in living.
