Cyrus Field and the Atlantic Telegraph Company

Cyrus West Field was the driving force behind the idea to run a cable under the Atlantic and he started championing this idea in 1854. He spoke extensively with Frederick Newton Gizborne, who had run a line from Nova Scotia to the tip of Newfoundland before his company collapsed. And he referred to Samuel Morse to make sure that the technical requirements for this line would be adequately addressed.
