The Relationship Between Toritas and Potestas

In Christianity, the structure of authority and power of a toritas and potestas became the backdrop for the manner in which all of Christianity understood their legal system. The emperor is addressing with his right hand, like a senator but he's also holding that scroll. And that scroll is seen by art historians as also a stand-in for potestas - it's the law that's written down.
