Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

CHAPTER

Chopin's Black Keys Etude

Chopin writes this etude in G-flat major, meaning that there are six flats in the key signature. So why is it called the black keys etude? Well anyone who has ever looked at a piano keyboard before knows that there are white keys and black keys with the black keys playing sharp and flat notes. Every B, E, A, D, G, and C in the piece is meant, unless specifically marked, to be played as a flat note.
