In 17 57, a small boy by the name of edward jenner was inoculated against smallpox in gloucester. He encountered a dairy maid named sarah who had active cow pox. And went ahead and inoculated an eight year old boy named james phipps with that strain. The latin word for cow is vaca, and cow pox is latin name is vacinia, ok? That's an interesting first foray into the theory that inoculation with the safer cow pox could prevent the more dangerous small pox.
