The Pandemic of Communicable Disease

The main character of the book is charity dean start, who's whose career really starts when she becomes the public health officer for santa barbara county. She makes herself a student of communicable disease in the way that patten was a student of war and she takes her job very seriously. When you take one of those jobs very seriously, you end up in essentially a television drama, because you're looking for the bad thing, and you find the bad thing over and it is terrifying. It astonishes me how society has not swivelled its attention to local public health officers who actually were fighting diseases on the ground before the pandemic.
