The funding was approved by the US Congress in the mid-1980s under the Reagan administration. The SSE would have been much higher energy than the Large Hadron Collider, which we're also proud of right now that discovered the Higgs boson. And this was seen as a great kind of more than a lifeline. This was seen as the future of the field at exactly the time when you and I were young students. It really goes back to a tradition that stems right back to the immediate aftermath of the Second World War.
