The AP reported Robeson as saying, quote, it is unthinkable that American Negroes would go to war on behalf of those who have oppressed us for generations against one which in one generation has lifted our people to full human dignity. The US State Department demanded a response from Roy Wilkins and Walter White of the NAACP. And the House Un-American Activities Committee brought in Jackie Robinson to testify against Paul Robeson in July of 1949. Jackie Robinson apparently reluctantly testified that Paul Robeson did not speak for all black people.
