Scaling Up a Sand Battery

Polar Night Energy in Finland is developing a solar-powered sand battery. It can store energy for months, if need be and it's up to 10 times cheaper than the lithium-ion batteries in your phone or electric car. The company says they could expand their business around the world by using other materials such as industrial waste products that are not harmful to environment.
