All of the West children experienced abuse to some extent, but Annamarie was singled out for the cruelest of treatment. She suspected Rose resented her for being the only child in the household who wasn't biologically hers. Yet, Fred witnessed the abuse from Rose first-hand and never stepped in to defend Annamarie. On the contrary, he chuckled at what his wife was doing. In contrast to the sadistic domineering and cruel way that Rose treated Annamarie, Fred was affectionate. He'd forced himself onto her, then say he loved her.
