The Conservatism of Artificial General Intelligence
Chat GPT doesn't understand for Chinese room argument kinds of reasons. What we have is symbol manipulation, even if it's manipulates them in ways that result in accurate outcomes or we can interpret the outputs such that if we see that they're true or they're false. We don't have any understanding and it's not a scale issue. It would just be sort of Insanely premature to pronounce that we've got some artificial general intelligence because the nature of understanding is itself opaque to us.
