The Origins of Gnosticism
Gnosticism is not derived from Persian Zoroastrianism or primarily Greek philosophy, but a response to crises of Christianity in the first century AD. The belief had to do with vanquishing of the wicked powers in the spirit world. As it says in Luke, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. There is the sense that these celestial realms have been infested by evil entities. And that is why the apocalypse was certain to come and the new world was going to come.
