Grant's Relationship With Andrew Johnson Changed His Perceptions of African-Americans and Race
When the Civil War broke out, Grant believed it's going to be a short war and that it's best not to touch slavery. By about the time of the battle of Shiloh in April of 1862, Grant is starting to recognize that Confederates, the point of no return has been reached. And he comes around to really support the idea of black men enlisting in the US Army and serving the United States' colored troop regiments. I think Grant's deteriorating relationship with Andrew Johnson is a big moment.
