The Cross-Strait Tourism in Taiwan
During the Cold War when the Nationalist Party was locked in a conflict with the Communist Party in China, travel between Taiwan and China was blocked. There were some interesting incidents of people swimming or flying across but for the whole for several decades there was almost no crossing between both sides until 1987. When martial law was formally lifted in Taiwan and Taiwanese people were permitted to go on well Taiwan based people as well were permitted to visit China For family visits, maybe medical visits, maybe some educational exchanges. And likewise people from China were admitted into Taiwan also on these sort of limited visits. At the same time though there was a lot of open optimism and increasing flows on both sides through the 90s. Still
