I think we as humanity always have a tendency to say everything is worse now than it's ever been in the past. In other words, unlike the 70s, we know what we can do to fix a lot of these things, but we just don't trust anybody to have the will or the power to do anything about them. And that leads to its own kind of futility. It may mirror the 70s,. but it's a more exhausted futility in which there's nobody coming to save us, even if the government gets out of the way.
