I think he really did like Orwell's sort of just common, sensical, English version of socialism because his Orwell was always a socialist until the day he died. Hitchens never he never actually repudiated socialism as a system or as a concept so much as he said that the socialist movement had collapsed and it wasn't going to revive. But yeah, you just don't need some overarching ideology. You can just say, well, what works? And then have a few principles.
