The problem of lack of female directors started at the agency level. Greta Gerwig, before she got Barbie, did a little women movie that made more than $200 million worldwide on a budget of less than $40 million. There are programs at Sundance and other places that have given women directors more opportunities to get those first and second movies under their belt. But there is still though that disconnect between being on the list and given the opportunity to take over what is a big budget franchise.
