In 2004, the Chinese Communist Party decided that Australia should be part of its overall periphery. We know this because a diplomat at China's embassy in Australia, Chen Yong-wen, came out and said that and then sought asylum in 2004. What I always say to Western governments, including our own, is just be confident where we come from. And don't take a backward step if there is any, as it were, crossing of the line in terms of any infringement of those values. So go public when you need to.
