In practice, it's getting to know the human being with the serious illness. People are very distraught when bad things happen to them as if they didn't deserve it. Bad things happen whether you deserve it or not. So there's coming into terms with that for as long as it lasts and then do it again when there's another setback. It is such gratifying and fascinating work. And difficult work.
