Europe's energy supply was already constrained before the war. Strong demand for natural gas during the post-pandemic economic recovery had sent energy prices through the roof. Russia began retaliating against international boycotts and EU sanctions by cutting gas supplies to its neighbors. We must now reduce as soon as possible our dependency on Russian fossil fuels, Ficorbo says.
