Joan Didion had a really interesting evolution as a writer sort of politically, in more ways than just that. She was innately skeptical of what was going on, partly because, you know, she was neutral and observant enough to not be part of what was Going On. Even if the literary elites were very much in favor of hippie idealism, she critiqued them from all sides for their nonsense.
