What Is Shar's Wood?
The house was built around 1850 in the Gothic Revival style by a well-known New York architect. In the 1800s, Shar's Wood had been the seat of a major 1300-acre plantation. Before the Civil War, Pennsylvania County held more than 14,000 enslaved people.
