James Chadwick was working with Rutherford, when he discovered the atomic nucleus. In 1930-ish there were other experiments going on in the world that found a new neutral radiation. The major dispute at the time was is the neutron a single particle in its own right? Or is it somehow a mixture of a proton and an electron?
